Dr Altuğ Tuncel graduated from Gazi University’s Faculty of Medicine in 1996 and completed his medical proficiency training at the Urology Department of the same faculty on March 21, 2002. Upon the completion of his medical proficiency training, he started to work as a chief assistant at the Third Urology Clinic at Ankara Numune Research and Training Hospital of the Ministry of Health on July 11, 2002. In 2006, he was awarded the Rotation Scholarship of the Association of Urooncology-Astra Zeneca Domestic Assistantship Urooncology and worked at Hacettepe University’s Urology Department (Turkey) in the field of Urooncology under the guidance of Prof Dr Haluk Özen. Following this, he was awarded a Postdoctoral Research Scholarship by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBİTAK) and worked as a research fellow for 9 months at the University of Texas (USA), Faculty of Medicine, Southwestern Medical Centre, Department of Urology, Minimally Invasive Surgical Division under the guidance of Prof Dr Jeffrey A. Cadeddu and took part in a number of research projects on endourology and urooncology. At the Minimally Invasive Surgical Training Centre of the same Department, he was trained in urologic laparoscopic surgery through practical work at the wet laboratory with animal models and at the dry laboratory with Virtual Reality Simulator (Lap Mentor®). He also attended laparoscopic operations undertaken by Prof Dr Cadeddu as an observer. Upon his return to Turkey, he started undertaking urologic laparoscopic surgeries at the clinic where he is currently working. Dr Tuncel received the title of associate professor on December 25, 2008 following the successful completion of the relevant exams. Dr Tuncel was also awarded the certificate of Turkish Urology Proficiency Council and the Certification of Fellows of the European Board of Urology (FEBU). Dr Altuğ Tuncel was promoted to full Professorship at the University of Health Sciences, Ankara Numune Research and Training Hospital, Department of Urology in June 2017. Currently, he is the Educational Director of this hospital and of the Urology Clinic. Dr Tuncel has published extensively in international and national journals and other publications. He has actively enrolled as faculty at several international scientific organizations including Societe Internationale d’Urologie (SIU) and European Association of Urology, Urotechnology Group (ESUT). He regularly takes part in practical and theoretical training activities, particularly in the field of endourology and laparoscopy. In addition to his contributions to the general field of urology, Dr Tuncel’s work focuses more on endourology (minimally invasive prostate surgery, upper and lower urinary tract laparoscopic surgery, minimally invasive urinary tract stone surgery), and urooncology.
